Occlusion/TMJ

Before we begin any treatment we make sure that your bite is stable. What that means is that your teeth fit together correctly and your jaw joint is in the correct position. If your bite is unstable it may cause teeth or restorations to break, crack or chip, and if untreated it may lead to more serious problems such as TMJ disorder. Your bite can change throughout your life due to factors such as loss of teeth (with the consequent shifting of the teeth), fractures or injuries of the jaw, orthodontic movement of the teeth to new positions, or the shifting of the teeth due to the constant pressures from grinding or clenching.

Many people suffer from TMJ disorders and unfortunately many times it is misdiagnosed. Symptoms of TMJ disorders may include clicking, popping and locking of the jaw and pain when you chew or open your mouth wide. Various ailments such as migraine headaches, neck and shoulder pain, dizziness, and ringing in the ears have also been linked to TMJ disorders. Talk with us at your next appointment and find out how you can be on your way to a healthy, stable, pain free smile.
